The axiom “When in Rome…” is best applied to Roman sightseeing on two levels: See what the Romans did, and roam as the Romans do. On the first level, no trip to Rome is complete without visits to the mandatory destinations: the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Vatican, the Trevi, and the like. However, some of my favorite moments in Rome came from roaming: browsing through small shops, checking out flea markets, and never knowing when the road I was walking on would come upon an antiquated sculpture, fountain, or other work of art.
