Two Louisville bases: the south airport/Expo corner and the east-side I-64 corridor

The south airport/Expo corner sits about five miles south of downtown at the junction of I-65 and I-264. Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport and the Kentucky Exposition Center face each other here, so this base covers flights, conventions, and fairground events without a drive across town.

The east side gives you two useful anchors for an 18+ hotel search. The Hurstbourne Parkway cluster sits at I-64 Exit 15, about 15 minutes from the airport and east of downtown. Louisville's eastern suburbs are mostly located between the Watterson Expressway (I-264) and the Gene Snyder Freeway (I-265), where St. Matthews, Jeffersontown, Middletown, and Norton Commons form a shopping and dining destination.

Churchill Downs is two miles from the Expo Center

If your Louisville trip revolves around Churchill Downs, the south airport/Expo base is where you want to search. Churchill Downs sits about two miles from the Kentucky Exposition Center, close enough that a hotel near the Expo Center also serves a race day or Derby week. Keep the hotel search on the south side and the morning of the race stays simple.

A room near the Expo Center puts you a short ride from the track. You can leave the logistics to the ride and spend the day at Churchill Downs without a long drive hanging over the event.

The airport no longer has a TARC bus stop

Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport lost its direct bus link when the Transit Authority of River City (TARC) redesigned its network in August 2026. No TARC route reaches the airport, so arrivals plan a car, a ride, or a shuttle. TARC remains a bus-only system with no rail transit.

The south airport/Expo base keeps you near the terminal, which matters more now that the bus is gone. Check the 18+ hotel's address relative to the airport before you book, because the east-side I-64 corridor puts a ride-share trip between your gate and the room.

Is the Kentucky Exposition Center walkable from the airport?

The Kentucky Exposition Center sits about a mile from Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport, directly across from the airport. Treat it as a short ride, not a walk, and plan your Expo Center morning accordingly.

A hotel on the south side keeps you near the Expo Center and the airport. For a multi-day fair or convention, that proximity matters more than saving a few dollars on a room farther out.
