Mississippi's capital is a long drive from its beaches
Jackson, Mississippi's capital, sits inland. If you were picturing a beach weekend, look at a map before you book anything, because Mississippi's Gulf Coast beaches are about 165 road miles from Jackson, nearly three hours of driving. That makes Jackson the wrong base for a beach trip, and no hotel in it will change that.
Book Jackson when the trip is actually about Jackson. The city has hotels for 18-year-olds, and if the beach was never the plan, the distance to the coast does not cost you anything.
Getting to Mississippi's capital by air, road, or rail
Commercial flights into Jackson land at Jackson-Medgar Wiley Evers International Airport, roughly 6 miles from downtown Jackson. Six miles is a downtown figure, nothing more, so do not stretch it to cover the rest of Jackson.
If you drive, Jackson is where Interstate 20 and Interstate 55 cross, one running east to west and the other north to south. Whichever of the four directions you are coming from, one of those two interstates carries you into the city, so the way in is not something you need to plan around, and the room is the part that still needs a decision.
Amtrak comes into Jackson at Union Station downtown, where rail, bus, and local transit meet, so if you arrive by train without a car, the bus and local transit options start right where you step off.
