Sleep outside the Great Dismal Swamp refuge

Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge gives hikers daylight hours, from sunrise to sunset. Camping and overnight use are prohibited on refuge property, so a tent in your pack doesn't solve where you'll sleep. If you're coming to Chesapeake for an overnight hiking trip, keep a room or other accommodation outside the refuge in the plan.

There is a primitive camping facility near Lake Drummond, run separately by the US Army Corps of Engineers. You can only reach it by watercraft, which makes it a different proposition from walking a trail and pitching a tent at the end. An 18+ hotel lets you keep the trip about hiking, with somewhere to sleep after the trails close.
