Expect hills when walking around Nob Hill

Nob Hill has hotels hundreds of feet above the city. For a stay that involves a lot of walking, that elevation is part of deciding whether the location will work for you.

Most of San Francisco's waterfront is flat, unlike the hilly interior. If you would rather avoid steep climbs, check the routes you plan to walk before choosing an 18+ hotel.

San Francisco street parking: limits and one-block moves

A regular passenger car or motorcycle can remain in a public street space for up to 72 hours only when no other posted restriction applies. Meters, permit zones, shorter time limits and street sweeping can all require you to act sooner.

  • Without a permit in a permit area, you must move after the posted limit, typically 1 to 2 hours. You need to move one block or at least one-tenth of a mile. Driving around and returning to the same block does not satisfy the rule.
  • Check the sweeping hours even if you're only staying briefly. Within the posted sweeping hours, you can park once the curbside has physically been swept.

Street parking that requires frequent moves is a poor fit if you plan to leave the car for the day. You'll need a place where it can remain while you're out.
