Westport nightlife needs its own age check

On certain weekend evenings and during some special events, parts of the Westport Entertainment District may be restricted to people 21 and older. The restriction can apply to an area you're hoping to spend the evening in, not just the door of a bar.

Individual venues can also set their own age and ID requirements. If Westport nightlife is the reason for booking your Kansas City room, find out whether the places you want to visit will admit you before committing to the stay. Finding an 18+ hotel doesn't tell you whether the venue will let you in.

Consider the KC Streetcar when choosing a hotel

KC Streetcar is free and runs daily between Riverfront and the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC). River Market, Power & Light, Crossroads and Union Station are stops on the same line. That route can help you weigh a hotel's location against the places you plan to visit.

Regular service hours are:

  • Sunday through Thursday: 5 a.m. to midnight.
  • Friday and Saturday: 5 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Holiday hours can differ. If you're relying on the streetcar during your stay, plan another way back for an evening that continues after service ends.

Kansas City's Arena Fee is charged by room

In Kansas City, Missouri, the Arena Fee is $3 per room per day and is generally passed on to hotel guests. It's a lodging charge, not an arena ticket or a charge for each person sharing the room. Establishments with eight rooms or fewer are exempt. If the fee appears on your bill, one room for two nights means $6 before tax.

A passed-through Arena Fee is also subject to the city's 7.5% Convention and Tourism tax, which applies to taxable sleeping-room charges. In that two-night example, the tax adds 45 cents to the fee alone. These are only components of the bill, so compare the room's full quoted total with applicable taxes included. Don't add the fee again if it's already in that total.
