If your Utah plans sit outside Salt Lake City, nothing here will cover them, and it is better to know that before you book anything. If the capital is where you are headed, what is left is a distance question, whether Salt Lake City fits a ski trip or is the wrong city to sleep in for the national parks.
Ski resorts sit close to this Utah city, the parks do not
The ski case is the easy call, because Alta, Snowbird, Brighton, and Solitude all sit within about 35 miles of Salt Lake City International Airport, and the airport itself is five miles northwest of downtown. Snowbird is about 29 miles from downtown Salt Lake City, roughly a 40-minute drive. That is close enough to ski from a city hotel.
The parks are a different distance altogether. Zion National Park is just over a four-hour drive from Salt Lake City, and Arches and Canyonlands are a little more than three and a half hours out. If those parks are the reason for the trip, a room in the capital is the wrong base.
So sort the trip before the room. Salt Lake City works for a ski trip or for a stay that is about the city itself. For a parks trip, those drive times are the reason to pick a different base.
