A Virginia room reservation won't stop a hotel from turning you away at 18 when it requires guests to be 21. There are 18+ hotels in the cities below, whether you already have a destination in mind or are still deciding where to stay.

Virginia rail trips can continue by Amtrak Connection bus

Virginia Beach has Amtrak Connection bus service from the regional train stations. For an overnight trip by train, that onward bus service is a reason to consider staying in Virginia Beach.

Chesapeake's rail arrival uses one of the same regional train stations, outside Chesapeake. A Chesapeake stay needs a separately planned onward journey from that train station, so settle that part of the trip before reserving a room there.

The $1 and $2 lodging charges in two Virginia cities

A taxable hotel stay in either city carries 6% sales tax, with local lodging taxes added separately. For an ordinary short visit, the combined charges are:

  • Chesapeake: 14% plus $1 per occupied room per night, combining 8% lodging tax with the 6% sales tax. The city lodging tax applies to stays of 90 consecutive days or less.
  • Virginia Beach, outside the Sandbridge Special Service District: 15% plus $2 per night. Inside that district, the combined percentage rises to 16.5%, with the same $2 nightly charge.

Suppose one taxable room night costs $100 before tax, with no other charges. That becomes $115 in Chesapeake or $117 in Virginia Beach outside Sandbridge. The $2 difference explains the tax effect on equal room prices; it doesn't make every Chesapeake hotel the cheaper stay.

Compare the actual room quotes with their fees included. Charges for arranging the reservation can also attract sales tax, so the room rate alone may not be the full taxable amount. If a quote already includes taxes, don't add them a second time.
