Two of these Missouri cities are about 250 road miles apart
Kansas City sits at the western end of that stretch and calls itself the Barbecue Capital of the World, a place where barbecue gets treated as an art form. Saint Louis is the eastern one, built where the Mississippi and Missouri rivers meet. It calls itself a city of neighborhoods, and Gateway Arch National Park there marks the city's role in westward expansion.
Springfield sits well off to the southwest, about 215 road miles from Saint Louis on I-44 and about 165 miles south of Kansas City. The name Route 66 was first proposed in Missouri's Springfield in 1926, and the city goes by the Birthplace of Route 66.
A barbecue weekend, a river city with the Arch in it, and the city where Route 66 got its name are separate reasons to be in Missouri, and each one is its own trip in its own part of the state. The search for hotels for 18-year-olds gets a lot shorter once you have settled on one city.

Kansas City International Airport is about 19 miles from downtown Kansas City. Saint Louis has St. Louis Lambert International Airport, and Springfield-Branson National Airport is in Springfield itself.
Springfield is where that counts most, out in the southwest of the state and a long way from either of the others. With an airport of its own, a Springfield trip does not have to start in another Missouri city.
