Duke University dorm visits depend on the academic calendar
Duke University doesn't allow overnight guests during final exams. If your friend has permission to stay in university housing over a break, that extension doesn't let them host you overnight either. An invitation from your friend doesn't override either restriction.
At other times, your friend's roommates must agree in advance. Duke permits guests for reasonable periods, typically no longer than 72 hours, so an invitation for a weekend isn't an open-ended place to stay. If your visit will run longer, have your friend confirm the arrangement with Duke housing or plan a hotel for the extra nights.
Sleeping overnight in a residence-hall common room is prohibited too. A lounge won't cover a night when you can't stay in your friend's room; include that night when working out how many hotel nights to book.
