Hotels that allow 18-year-olds to check in: Houston

The Energy Corridor district sits about 22 miles west of downtown Houston, and the Willowbrook area about 20 miles northwest. The airports continue the pattern: George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) is about 20 miles north of downtown, Hobby Airport (HOU) about 11 miles southeast.

That spread makes the arrival airport feel like the first hotel decision. It is not, and the 500 Downtown Direct bus is the reason: it covers the airport-to-downtown leg from either airport. What the bus does not solve is the rest of a trip across a city this size, which is why the hotels on this page, every one of which takes 18-year-olds, are worth judging by the plans that brought you to Houston rather than the flight that got you here.

METRO, the city's transit agency, launched this route in April 2025 as a downtown-to-IAH airport bus and extended it to Hobby in February 2026. The bus runs from Hobby Airport through downtown to Terminal E at IAH, with downtown stops that include the Downtown Transit Center and the GRB North Transit Center Garage next to the George R. Brown Convention Center. The fare is $4.50 one-way.

The route runs seven days a week, so a Saturday landing works the same as a Tuesday one. If your flight gets in late, check the last departure on METRO's current timetable before you build the arrival around the bus. With both airports on one route, the hotel decision can be about the trip you came for instead of the runway you land at.

The Red Line is light rail, not a subway, with trains running from early morning to about midnight. METRORail serves neither airport, so the train will not bring you in from your flight. Where it helps is the middle of the trip. South of downtown, the line links:

• the Museum District, for a museum day
• the Texas Medical Center, for appointments and visits
• NRG Park, for games and concerts at the stadium complex, where the stop is Stadium Park/Astrodome

Space Center Houston, the visitor center for NASA's Johnson Space Center, sits about 26 miles southeast of downtown. At that distance it is a deliberate out-and-back, not a stop to squeeze between other plans.

Treat it as a full day out. Pairing it with a downtown morning puts the middle of the day on the road, and the site deserves more than the hour left after the drive.

If the Space Center is the reason for the trip, judge hotels by their distance to it rather than to downtown; 26 miles from downtown is the number to beat. If it is one day out of several, stay where the rest of the trip points and treat the drive southeast as part of the day out.
