San Antonio hotels that allow 18-year-olds to check in

The booking screen sorts by price, and every result just says San Antonio. The two highway loops are the part the screen leaves out. Loop 410 is the inner ring, Loop 1604 is the outer one, and most of the far-cluster hotels sit between them or beyond them.

Read the far clusters as real distances from downtown. Stone Oak, the far-north area up the US-281 airport corridor, is about 17 miles north. The SeaWorld and Lackland air base side runs about 15 to 18 miles west. Frost Bank Center, the east-side arena, sits about 4 miles east.

San Antonio International Airport, SAT, sits about 8 miles north of downtown on US-281. There is no train to catch: San Antonio has no light rail, metro, or commuter rail, and the transit agency, VIA, is bus-only.

Two VIA bus routes serve the airport, and they do different jobs. Route 5 is the cheap local run: it boards at the far west end of Terminal B on the arrivals level, runs downtown in about 30 to 45 minutes, and costs $1.30. Buses typically come every 30 to 60 minutes, so the wait is part of the trip. Route 7 is the US 281 Stone Oak Express, running from the Stone Oak Park & Ride to the airport and on to downtown for $2.60 each way, and the nonstop Stone Oak-to-airport leg takes about 15 minutes. It picks up at the airport on the lower level outside Terminal B baggage claim.

The alternative is a car. Taxis to downtown start at $24 to $29 on the airport tariff, and a rideshare runs about $25 to $35, taking 15 to 20 minutes off-peak. Route 5 points downtown and Route 7 covers the Stone Oak end. The other far clusters have no airport bus at all, and that is where the car budget goes.

VIA's visitor network is called VIVA, and it is three bus routes: VIVA Culture (Route 11), VIVA Missions (Route 40), and VIVA Centro (Route 301). All three converge downtown at the Alamo and run seven days a week.

Any of them costs the same $1.30 a ride, and the $2.75 unlimited day pass covers a full day on the network. If the plan is to see San Antonio without a car, stay near the meeting point, because the whole visitor network comes to it.

Is the River Walk the same thing as downtown?

For booking purposes, yes. The River Walk is a pedestrian loop one level below the downtown streets, not a separate district across town. When one stay says River Walk and another says downtown, you are comparing two addresses in the same area, so compare them on the room, not the label.

Can you reach the missions without a car?

Yes. VIVA Missions, bus Route 40, is the visitor route built for the San Antonio Missions, the colonial mission churches. It comes through the same Alamo meeting point as the other VIVA routes. The $2.75 day pass earns its keep when the missions are one stop on a longer day.
