Hotels that allow 18-year-olds in Washington

By Alexander Backus · Updated September 2026

Plan a Washington trip at 18 and you can run into hotels that only check in guests 21 and older. You do have to be a little choosy, because 18+ hotels share the state with hotels that refuse guests under 21. So which of the cities below gets the booking?

These Washington cities sit on very different water

Seattle and Tacoma are the Puget Sound side of the state, while Spokane sits out on the rolling plains of eastern Washington. Spokane's water is the Spokane River, which runs through a gorge and over Spokane Falls in the middle of downtown, with the 100-acre Riverfront Park laid out on an old railyard alongside. Picture the water you expect to see on this trip. If it is the Sound, you are booking west; if it is a river and a waterfall inside a city park, you are booking Spokane.

Spokane is a separate eastern choice, not a nearby alternative. It sits about 280 road miles east of Seattle and about 290 from Tacoma, so choosing a side of the state comes before choosing a room. Flights land out east as well, at Spokane International Airport, the second largest airport in Washington.

A historic market and the Rainier gateway share Puget Sound

The market half is Pike Place Market, a nine-acre historic district at 85 Pike Street that opened in 1907. It overlooks Puget Sound, and if wandering those nine acres is what the trip is for, Seattle is your city.

Tacoma is the gateway to Mount Rainier, and it has a Puget Sound waterfront of its own. For a trip built around Mount Rainier, Tacoma is the city to book, not Seattle.

Even the airport is named for both cities, Seattle-Tacoma International, and its street address is in SeaTac, a separate city, so where you land does not decide between Seattle and Tacoma. The two cities sit only about 34 road miles apart. Decide by the market or the mountain, and check in at 18 in the city you picked.
